Gulf Shrimp is King

by

My sixth and final poster is my tribute to Alabama’s seafood industry. Growing up in Alabama, we frequently visited Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in the summer. Almost every restaurant on the coast offered a “peel and eat” steamed or boiled shrimp option, and frequently they were “Royal Reds”. According to the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission website, “(t)he crowned jewel of Alabama Shrimp, the Royal Red is a tastier species compared to the pink, white, and brown varieties.” You can recognize a Royal Red Shrimp because they’re bigger, a deeper red shade compared to pink and brown shrimp, and their naturally salty flavor due to the deep Gulf waters where they make their home. They may cost more, but it’s because they taste the best.

 Process

To start, I drew the shrimp in Procreate. I then imported it to Adobe Illustrator and vectorized it. I place it over a blue rectangle to represent the ocean. Next, I placed a vector image of a net behind the shrimp that was licensed from Adobe Stock. Then, I chose a bold, sanserif typeface for my call to action. I replaced the “A” in “Royal” with a vector image of the state of Alabama. I added a transparency mask to the shrimp image to give it a distressed printing effect. I also added a transparency mask of fold lines to the whole image to give the poster the appearance of having been torn from a comic book or magazine and folded up to bring home.
